Spinal Decompression Therapy

Smith_Decompress6-300.jpgSciatica, degenerative discs, bulging and herniated discs, and spinal stenosis are frustrating and painful conditions that were difficult to manage in the past. Often patients were left with the choice between heavy medications or surgery. This has recently changed because of innovations that combined computer automation, traction, and new knowledge in biomechanics. The end result is Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression.

In its simplest form, non-surgical spinal decompression is a computer-driven, automated way to stretch the spine. The spinal discs comprise one third of the length of our spines. As we age, our discs and spinal joints become compressed and stiff. With injuries and aging, the discs can bulge or lose water content and this causes us to shrink in height. This can lead to the stooped posture that contributes to chronic back and neck pain, compression on the heart and lungs, advanced degenerative arthritis, and other skeletal signs of premature aging.

Spinal discs comprise one third of the length of your spine. Taking good care of the spine is important as we age.

Compression of the spinal discs and joints is one of the major causes of back pain and contributes to degenerative spinal stenosis, the pain from herniated discs, mechanical back pain and other related spine disorders. Other treatments of lower back pain, including medication, injections, chiropractic, massage and exercise fail in certain cases. This is where decompression therapy is used as an adjunct. The results can be spectacular.

To see if you are a candidate for non-surgical spinall decompression therapy, all Smith Chirorpactic of Buena Park today an shcedule a consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Does My Insurance Cover this?

Spinal Decompression therapy is currently not a covered benefit under medical insurance plans. Success rates are very high, so in years to come it will probably be covered. However, it currently is not.

Q: Is Decompression Expensive?

Compared to an orthopedic visit, an MRI and a dozen physical therapy visits, it is a bargain. It is an expensive piece of equipment, requires a staff person for set up, and requires a thirty minute treatment cycle, so it is more expensive than a routine chiropractic office visit. However, because it can be effective where nothing else is, it is a bargain.

Q: Are there side affects?

With appropriate patient selection, it is safer than surgery, epidural injections, or other comparable treatments. The important thing is that a prospective patient is evaluated thoroughly before initiating treatment. This will insure its safety and effectiveness.

Q: What is involved in treatment?

Our treatment protocol includes a series of decompression treatments along with a special chiropractic adjustment method, physiotherapy modalities of heat, ice and interferential current, and a progressive exercise program. For most conditions it is a 10 week program.
